Where to Stay in Istanbul? Taksim or Sultanahmet?
There are 3 major areas in Istanbul and where to stay in Istanbul will depend mainly on what you wish to get out of Istanbul and I don’t think you’ll regret wherever you will stay.
If you don’t want to take a taxi after a night out, Taksim hotels would be nice to stay. these are a bit more expensive than other ones, but also better service quality.
The problem with this location is you need to use public transport or taxi to get Sultanahmet, Bluemosque, Grand Bazaar or Eminönü. However if you have been in Istanbul and saw more of those sites and heritage of Istanbul, Taksim is great place to stay in Istanbul.
The best reason to book in Sultanahmet stems from the fact that its close from Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, etc. They are all within walking distance of most hotels located in this area. The flip side is unfortunately that Sultanahmet turns into a pretty dead neighborhood once the sun sets. After dark the streets are empty and good night entertainment is scarce.
It’s very easy to travel back and forth between Sultanahmet and Taksim. If you’re traveling before midnight, just take the tram from Sultanahmet to the Kabatash tram stop and then the metro connector to Taksim Square. If you’re traveling after midnight you’ll have to take a taxi.
